Genetics and Metabolism Shape Semaglutide Weight Loss

A new preprint explores why semaglutide leads to greater weight loss in some individuals than others. Drawing on data from over 130,000 participants, researchers found that a lower genetic risk for high BMI was associated with more weight loss. Over 12 months, people with low BMI polygenic scores lost up to 1.8% more weight than those with higher scores. Metabolic conditions like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and fatty liver disease also blunted the drug’s effects. These insights highlight the growing role of precision medicine in obesity treatment.
